THE EASYBEATS

Easybeats main

The Easybeats were formed in Australia in 1964 when they met all at Sydney’s austere Villawood Migrant Hostel. They soon found themselves to be the equivalent of the Beatles in Australia, causing what was called “Easyfever” throughout 1965. Although by the time the Easybeats landed in England in 1966, their creative balance was shifting. Originally Harry Vanda, who was actually Dutch and Englishman lead singer Stevie Wright would pen their tunes, now Vanda teamed up with George Young and the first song written together, which was also the first to be recorded in England (with Shel Talmy producing) was the song that is most remembered from them:Friday On My Mind. A huge international hit, it was the first for an Australian pop/rock group at the time.

Friday On My Mind let the Easybeats move on with confidence and resulted in spending most of 1967 and 68 in the studio, creating some of those years most ambitious work—which is no understatement. They tried their hand with all types of musical styles, from good old rock n’ roll (Good Times) to psych pop (Land Of Make Believe), all the while finding new beats, melodies and guitar styles not heard in pop music before. The group more or less disintegrated by 1969. Drummer Snowy had become too homesick to continue working in England with the group and Tony Cahil replaced him. Their last album, Friends, was released in 1970 and showed the group lean towards the boogie rock similar to what the Status Quo went for around that time. It is also important to note that the album was really a Vanda/Young collaboration, as the group didn’t really exist anymore. However, a great wealth of unreleased work that was left behind eventually surfaced, salvaged in 1977, when Vanda & Young compiled The Shame Just Drained LP. Featuring 15 tracks from sessions dating from 1967-68, it shows the Easybeats should have been destined for greater things, but in similar style to the Kinks work of the same time, appreciation came much too late. Repertoire Records lovingly released all their original albums (with generous amounts of bonus tracks) in the early nineties.

Making up the four great bands of the 1966 pop-apocalypse were The Who, The Action, The Creation and finally The Attack. Four names that in their brevity summed up the instant flash of mod-pop appeal. They had more energy than an H-bomb after flash, and they hit the senses and the soul with a long awaited wake up call.Led by ex Ready Steady Go dancer Richard Shirman, aka Jivin’K. Boots (!), and future Nice guitarist David O’List , the Attack recorded singles for Decca, plus a number of unreleased tracks (including two only recently unearthed on acetate) and a radio session all included here.

Stand out tracks being Try It “bugged out insanity, with sexual overtones blowing the Standells version into oblivion”; We Don’t Know “a tight explosion of mod-soul”; Anymore Than I Do “a freak beat classic” - plus of course their pre-Jeff Beck version of Hi Ho Silver Lining.

A special package by Phil Smee, with full involvement of Richard Shirman, and notes by Chris Welch who followed the band for Melody Maker in 1968. A must for all Mod Collectors.

THE ATTACK

The Attack

Their roots lie with Richard Shirman and Gerry Henderson, who were in a group called The Soul System in 1965. Various member left and joined until the result was the late 1966 line-up of Shirman vocals; Henderson bass; Bob Hodges organ; Alan Whitehead (born 24.7.1945, in Oswestry, Shropshire) drums (on loan from Marmalade) and David John lead guitar. David John was Dave O’list (born David O’List, 13.12.1948, in Chiswick, West London), who had an initial shot of stardom as David John and the Mood. The System came to the attention of top agent Don Arden - who, on signing the band he found them a new name, The Attack and a first single Try It/We Don’t Know (Decca F 12550, Jan 1967). The Soul System had signed to Decca in late 1966. Davvy O’List later joined the Nice, Sep 1967 - Sep 1968, Roxy Music, Oct 1971 - Feb 1972, The Jets, Jul 1974 - July 1975 and Alan Whithead re-joined Marmalade. Hodges and Henderson faded into obscurity and Shirman remained and built a new Attack from scratch. The line-up was George Watts from Scotland organ; Chris Allen drums; Geoff Richardson guitar and Kenny Harold bass.

So one can say that the Attack were in fact, at least a couple different groups for the fact that vocalist Richard Shirman had to regroup Attack from almost scratch 3 times. The Attack’s beginnings lie in a group called The Soul System. With members coming and going, once a stabilized 5 piece arouse, the band came attention to Don Arden, a top agent who signed them, found their first single (Try It, a Standells tune) and Shirman changed their name to the Attack. Issued in January 1967, the single didn’t do much on the charts. However with it’s heavy garage sound, it is considered a minor Freakbeat classic. The flip side We Don’t Know is a rather strange jazz/soul and freakbeat hybrid with some silly lyrics. This same lineup stayed for the recording of their next single Hi-Ho Silver Lining before disbanding due to the lack of success with both 45’s. Hi-Ho Silver Lining was met with fierce competition as Jeff Beck, who presumably heard The Attack’s version and rushed out his own version as his first single after only a few days of The Attack’s single. The result was Jeff Beck getting the hit. The B side to Hi-Ho was an awesome piece of what we now call ‘freakbeat’, Any More Than I Do. This number, apart from being featured in recent compilations of the years, was used by John Peel for a radio jingle for the pirate Radio London. The guitarist responsible for the powerful riffing on Any More Than I Do, David O’List who left to break new group in the Nice, whilst drummer Alan Whitehead went back to the Marmalade and the others faded into obscurity.

Attack mk3

Richard Shirman, now the only one left, regrouped the Attack with Scottish organist George Watt, drummer Chris Allen, guitarist Geoff Richardson and bassist Kenny Harold. Their follow up to Hi-Ho was another kinda cheeky and very English affair, Created By Clive. In a very ironic coincidence, two versions of Created By Clive were released the same day, by The Attack and The Syn! The result was neither got any attention that the song was meant for which was probably better off as the liner notes of their posthumous compilation Magic In The Air notes “Clive, a fashion designer who specialized in dressing debs in see-through mini-dresses, would have probably sued anyway”. The new guitarist Geoff Richardson penned their B side, the slow tamped raga Colour Of My Mind. With the single just barely in the shops, auditions found a new guitarist John DuCann was added and the drummer and keyboard player were replaced too. With this lineup, The Attack went about playing all the venues available: Middle Earth, Tiles, the Speakeasy, etc. However, personnel changes shifted once more in the summer of 1967 and Geoff Richardson and Kenny Harold left; their replacement was Jim Avery. This new line-up recorded the two sides of their next single, Magic In The Air/Lady Orange Peel but the A side was rejected by Decca for being too heavy and the band were sent in to record the harmless Neville Thumbcatch. Two more tracks were recorded in October 1967, covers of Morning Dew and Loving You Is Sweeter Than Ever, but the single that was eventually released in January 1968 was Neville Thumbcatch backed with Lady Orange Peel. Thumbcatch was very similar to Cream’s Pressed Rat And Warthog with it’s narrative verses and trumpet melodies. With this single, the group disbanded again. DuCann and Shirman kept the Attack alive, recruiting bassist Roger Deane and drummer Keith Hodge and continued on as a four piece. This last lineup recorded tracks for a future album (titled Roman God of War) and single, all left in the can. Before their split in mid 1968, the group recorded many songs, including Winding Up Clocks, Feel Like Flying, Strange House, Just Waiting, Freedom For You, etc.

Unfortunately, not all of these tracks survived. However, those which did have been featured on various releases, culminating on Bam Caruso’s 2006 compilation About Time! which features all their singles and even some BBC sessions. The compilation gives a better idea at the groups musical legacy. Tracks like Magic In The Air, Strange House, Freedom For You & Colour Of My Mind justify their high place in British freakbeat/psych history. Perhaps with a more stable lineup, the band would have reached farther than they did.

DANATALIAN’S CHARIOT

Dantalian’s Chariot

This group grew out of Zoot Money’s Big Roll Band, going from Feb 1964 - Jul 1967. In Jul 1967 they became Dantalian’s Chariot with three members of the Big Roll Band, Zoot Money organ / vocals (born George Bruno Money, 17.7.1942, at Boscombe Hospital, Bournemouth, Dorset); Andy Sumers guitar (born Andrew Sumers, 31.12.1942, in Poulton-le-Fylde, near Blackpool, Lancs, went to Bournemouth at 2) and Colin Allen drums, adding Pat Donaldson on bass (born Edinburgh, Lothian, Scot). This line-up lasted until Apr 1968.

One of the most brilliant obscure psychedelic singles of the late ’60s — indeed, one of the most brilliant obscure rock singles of any kind from the era — was Dantalian’s Chariot’s Madman Running Through the Fields. This 1967 effort was British pop-psych at its zenith, strongly reminiscent of (and as good as) the classic early sides by Syd Barrett’s Pink Floyd. What made it all the stranger was that it was the debut single by a group of veteran musicians who, just a few months earlier, had been playing jazz/R&B fusion as Zoot Money’s Big Roll Band. Money, a journeyman keyboard player and singer, had made a few records without getting anything close to a hit; his band featured a young Andy Somers, over a decade before the guitarist would reach stardom with the Police (as Andy Summers). Such was the impact of psychedelic music in 1967, however, that by the middle of the year, Money had decided to totally revamp his sound. R&B/jazz/soul had become passe; now it was important to write your own material, and reflect the mind-expanding experience. With Somers still in tow, Zoot Money’s Big Roll Band became Dantalian’s Chariot. The music, written primarily by Money and Somers, changed as radically as the name, with airy melodies, spacy lyrics, and guitar/organ-driven arrangements. The band hit the London underground circuit inhabited by such acts as Pink Floyd and Soft Machine, and made their debut recording as Dantalian’s Chariot in the summer of 1967. The single, innovative as it was, didn’t make any commercial waves. Although they were a respected live act, their new direction wasn’t supported by EMI, which dropped the band. A psychedelic-minded LP was worked on, but not released. Some of the material appeared on an early 1968 record, which the Direction label assembled from various tunes cut over the past year. The fact that the album was credited to Zoot Money and the Big Roll Band, rather than Dantalian’s Chariot, was an indication that their psychedelic direction, again, would not find support on the industry level. All of this was not as great a tragedy as it might appear. A collection of psychedelic-oriented Dantalian’s Chariot tracks (several previously unreleased) did emerge in 1996, and while it shows them to be an interesting outfit, nothing comes close to the magnificence of Madman Running Through the Fields. Dantalion’s Chariot came to an end in the spring of 1968, with Somers joining the Soft Machine (and subsequently Eric Burdon’s Animals); Money would also join Eric Burdon’s Animals around the same time. Drummer Colin Allen went on to chalk up stints in John Mayall’s band.

LOOK AT ME I’M YOU

Look at me I’m you, look at me I’m you
Well, well, if it’s not another day
Should have known it would come again
Oh well, I had best be on my way
Down the road in the pouring rain
The air is filled with coal dust
From smokey chimney pots
The rain is making mirrors
And everything I see just seems to rot

Poor old Charlie, you’re so poorly
Why don’t you go back to bed
Sweet dreams give your mind a chance to
Look at me I’m you, look at me I’m you
Look at me I’m you, look at me I’m you

Well, well, Charlie MacIntosh I am
It is all that has stuck with me
Farewell, little boy you are a man
MacIntosh sells machinery
My life has dragged along in
A most depressing way
All that seemed right was wrong and
Echoes around my empty thoughts today
Charlie boy!
Poor old Charlie, he was poorly (Well well, if it’s not another day)
For a long time. Now he’s passed on. (Oh well, I had best be on my way)
Look at me I’m you, look at me I’m you
Look at me I’m you, look at me I’m you… (Repeat 5 times)

I’LL BE LATE FOR TEA

What would you do if you had a bus?

Hurry up sleep take me or I’ll be late for tea
Hurry up sleep take me or I’ll be late for tea
I was lying on my bed looking out the widow
Sleep taking over from my head and my mind would soon go
Fell down to the floor. No one saw, but my room laughed at me
Cause I’ll be late for tea
Oh it’s just a dream, I know
But if I’m late she will go,
And my princess will just flow away
I’ll be late for tea
Hurry up sleep take me or I’ll be late for tea
Hurry up sleep take me or I’ll be late for tea
So I have to try once more, for I was in a hurry
Pick myself up from the floor
She’d be waiting for me
Got back into bed, hoped my mind would soon set me free
Or I’ll be late for tea
Hurry up sleep take me or I’ll be late for tea
Hurry up sleep take me or I’ll be late for tea

THE REMARKABLE SAGA OF THE FROZEN DOG

This song is dedicated to the original freak-out man. His name is…

Won’t you come and tell me where you’ve been you silly little frozen dog
Won’t you come and tell me where you’ve been you silly little frozen dog
I’ll tell you a tale about a frozen dog, he’g gone (gone gone gone gone)
Went out one day and opened up his thoughts (thoughts thoughts thoughts thoughts)
He was frozen then but he’s not anymore, he’s got things to do,
Places to build
Now he’s out in the country side (side side side side)
Digging up lots of little things to do (do do do do)
He was frozen then but he’s not anymore, he’s got things to do,
Places to build
He’s got places to build, lots of places to build
Won’t you come and tell me where you’ve been you silly little frozen dog
Won’t you come and tell me where you’ve been you silly little frozen dog
Now he’s wagging this tail and killing flies (flies flies flies flies)
Shouting at cows and eating wooly sheeps (sheep sheep sheep sheep)
He was frozen then but he’s not anymore, he’s got things to do And places to build
Now he’s found his true vocation in life (life life life life)
He’s fell in love with a lady who sings folk music
He was frozen then but he’s not anymore, he’s got things to do
And places to build He’s got places to build, lots of places to build
Won’t you come and tell me where you’ve been you silly little frozen dog
Won’t you come and tell me where you’ve been you silly little frozen dog
Come and tell me where you’ve been you silly little frozen dog
Won’t you come and tell me where you’ve been you silly little frozen dog…(Repeat 7 times)

TELEGRAM TUESDAY

Telephones broken But there’s something on my mind
Telegram Tuesday that’s all I can do
Telegram Tuesday that’s all I can do
It’s been a bad time, lonely days and lonely nights
Telegram Tuesday that’s all I can do
Telegram Tuesday, but what words can I use
Well can I say that all the blame was on my part?
Or can I say that she is without a heart?
But I forget who I’m writing to
The only words I need to use is “I love you”
It’s been a bad time, lonely day and lonely nights
Telegram Tuesday that’s all I can do
Telegram Tuesday, but what words can I use
Well can I say that she is without a heart?
Or can I say that all the blame was on my part?
But I forget who I’m writing to
The only words I need to use is “I love you”

LOVE IS

She was only the thorn in my foot,
But I loved her just the same

Little square that we knew
Orange dress you knew I liked
very way about you
Love is vanishing overnight
Records that we listened to
Ornaments upon your shelf
The void I’m falling into
Love is gone. I blame myself
How was I to know I’d feel this way
But I do, and if you have ever felt the same way, too,
You’ll know just what I’m going through
Lingering of lost times
Loneliness comes with the night
Bell within a church chimes
Love that now is out of sight

WHAT’S IT FOR

Eh, let me say right away, that lest it has slipped you mind, eh,
This record is electrically recorded.
Electrically electrically. OH! Electrically! Oh!

What’s it for, this need for loving that once more
Is whispering unlock the door and let someone come through to find
The sip of love I leave behind In loving you
Unsure of quite what is true
Let that all go, I tell myself
What’s it for, I answer
And close the door, I answer
Why do I question her every thought I make?
What’s it for? The mere existence of a door
Is something to be grateful for, And after all what can I do
but hope what I call love is true
As I feel now. No asking questions this time
As I feel now, I wonder how “What’s it for” Existed
And open doors resisted
So I won’t question all the love I make
(Repeat entire last paragraph one more time)

PEOPLE OF THE ROYAL PARKS

Just take the caps up an octave, and you’ll be looking fine.
Georgie, you’re out of tune. You’re out of tune, man.

The people who run the Royal Parks will be happy some of these days
No more flowers and ice cream will never spoil their grass
They won’t have to smile if they don’t want to
They can read their Sunday papers
The people who run the Royal Parks will be happy some of these days
The people from the Parliament will be laughing any day now
They’ve closed the pub stations and locked the parks on a Sunday afternoon
They won’t have to endure smiling people
Love won’t get in their eyes
The people from the Parliament will be laughing any day now
They’ll be happy
They’ll be smiling
They’ll go to the races
They’ll drink scotch whiskey
They’ll practice smiling
The people that we know are happy all the time
All they want to do is spread a little sunshine for you
So please let us throw out flowers
We wont break the path keeper’s glasses
The people that we know are happy all of the time

WHAT ON EARTH

Introduction words, introduction words, introduction words…

What on earth am I doing here
Waiting for the world to stop raining
I shall go out
Before it all goes down the drain
What on earth are you doing there
Looking very much like you don’t care
Come on out and see
It’s not so bad
You should be glad
And It’s so true
You’ll feel much better the wetter you get
We are ever so clean
Cleaner that the tub on a washing machine
What on earth was that all about?
Granny takes the kids for an outing
Look at them play
Making all they can of the day
Why on earth are we wasting time
Waiting for a life of sunshine
Come on out and see
It’s not so bad
You should be glad
And it’s so true
It could be fine, full of sunshine
If you want to
What on earth am I doing here What on earth are you doing here
What on earth am I doing here What on earth are you doing here

MRS. MURPHY’S BUDGERIGAR

If I had a bus I’d, ah…….

Mrs. Murphy’s budgerigar is lost today
Nobody’s really certain why it ran away
It wan’t that she didn’t feed it, cause she was very kind
So if you see it, would you mind just phoning?
There’s a lady with a rusty pram to sell
Is she joking when she says it runs quite well?
Any reasonable offer will not refuse. I’m sure
She’ll even bring it to your door for inspection
If I was very rich, I know
I’d buy old bikes that didn’t go to see old ladies smiling
Someones got a train set and that’s a thing I’m for
This one so they say will cover half your floor
I bet somebody’s crying a little in that house today
Because they have to move away and sell everything
Mrs. Murphy’s budgerigar, I know you’re free
Certainly it’s nicer living in your tree
But Mrs. Murphy’s budgerigar won’t you just visit home
Cause Mrs. Murphy’s missing you. She’s all alone

I WILL BRING YOU THIS AND THAT

Well of course we’d, uh, like to give praises to all the bands, but, ah, everyone cant win.

Every time I call or phone, you’re always in
All you seem to talk about is where you’ve been
Don’t want to sound unkind. What’s going on in your tiny mind?
You’re dreaming all the time
I will bring you this and that. You can find out where you’re at.
I will bring you cardboard dishes. You can put your cardboard wishes in them, oo
Lalalala……
Looking good is understood to be just fine
But you’re just like a golden cup without the wine
You got the wrong things in few. Nobody’s gonna carry you.
Your should read some new books
I will bring you plastic flowers. You can play with them for hours.
I will bring you a balloon. You can float up to the moon
Some rainy time
Why can’t you see how it could be
And maybe I’d sympathize with you
Open up your eyes for you
If you let me
I will bring you something fair
Something lingering in the air
I will bring you love on Monday
Every other day and Sunday
You will see
Lalalalalal……

MISTER WATCHMAKER

Ready, ahem, ah

Mister Watchmaker,
Make me a watch that has not time
So I can stay as I am today
For tommorrow she’ll be gone
Mr. Watchmaker,
Give me a little for you have so much
So I can hide deep down inside
Of a memory
Yesterday time, well I would know when she was happy
But now there are tears in her eyes, and what else can that be?
Tell me
Mister Watchmaker,
Make me a watch that has not time
So I can stay as I am today
For tommorrow she’ll be gone

WHEN THE ALARM CLOCK RINGS

Jim’s been very upset lately. Nobody understands his guitar playing.
So here he is to explain it for himself.

When the alarm clock rings, you know I’ve got news
When the alarm clock rings, you know I’ve got news
When the alarm clock rings, time to wake up
It’s so cold outside. Why don’t you spend the day there?
If you keep this day for yourself, no one will care (Keep on sleeping, keep on sleeping, keep on sleeping, keep on

sleeping)
When the alarm clock rings, (Time to wake up)
Another day it brings. (Time to wake up(
A day of nowhere things. (Time to get)
Your valuesu sorted out. (It’s up to you)
And if you’re still in doubt, realize
There’s no use thinking. You’ve got to go
There’s no use caring. You boss will know
No use doing things you don’t believe, believe, believe, believe in
Think of things you’ll do during this new day of toiling
Think of things you’ll wear while your eggs are boiling
When the alarm clock rings (Time to wake up)
Another day it brings (Time to wake up)
It’s up to you (Time to wake up)
What will you do (Time to wake up)
It’s up to you (Time to wake up)
What will you do

THE INTREPID BALLOONISTS HANDBOOK, VOL 1

(Introduction in German)

Once upon a time, last week
A delightful creature passed my way
To win her, we would have to roam
Away somewhere and be alone
Now won’t you fly into the sky
It’s peaceful there, no passers-by
Just say the word and very soon
We’ll go sailing off in my balloon
Don’t be afraid you wont fall out
I’ve been up many times before
No my dear, you won’t be ill.
I’ve even got a skysick pill.
Oh I can’t wait to take you there
Providing that the weather’s fair
I promise not to go to far
While we’re sailing up in my balloon
You will? You’ll come? Ah, splendid stuff!
I hope the breezes aren’t to rough
Oh, just step inside, there’s room I hope
While I release the mooring rope
My dear, you’re floating to the sky
You seem to be going ever so high
I cannot hold this horrid rope!
Oh gosh, I don’t think there’s any hope
Really, you’re going ever so high, Felicity! I’ll never be able to reach you now

YOU

(Backward recording, reversed it says “Hm hm hm, Well of course, it’s uh… Well, no, we don’t have a reputation. In fact

we’re quite unknown. Unknown.)

I feel happy just to realize
Live with you just simplifies
Cause Love is living
And I’m giving
All of mine
To you
Complications go down the drain
I love the sun and I love the rain
Cause I feel high
Beneath the sky
The reason why
Is you
Cause you just make me
And you wont break me
Cause you elate me
It’s definitely
You
Complications go down the drain
I love the sun and I love the rain
Cause I feel high
Beneath the sky
The reason why
Is you
It’s you, it’s you, it’s you, it’s you

TRACK FOR SPEEDY FREAKS

PEACE LOVING MAN

Take this bomb, drop it on old Hong Kong
Oh no no, you ain’t gonna get me at things like that
Take this gun, go and have a little fun
Oh no no, you ain’t gonna give me that, things like that
Peace loving man, I’m a peace loving man
And I do what I can, yes I do
And I’ve got my eye on the sly little men
Who are putting the finger on you
And when things ain’t right, I don’t wanna fight
I’d rather go and sit in the rain
Peace lovin’ man, I’m a loving man and
I won’t tell you again
They’re so kind, they’re really gonna twist your mind
Oh no no, you ain’t gonna give me no things like that

Confusion, confusion
Can we help you
Confusion, confusion
Can you help us
Confusion, confusion
Do you want to be a part of this
Confusion for the rest of your entire…
Do you, do you
Oh no no, you ain’t gonna get me
Oh no no, you ain’t gonna get me

Peace loving man, I’m a peace loving man
And I do what I can, yes I do
And I’ve got my eye on the sly little men
Who are putting the finger on you
And when things ain’t right, I don’t wanna fight
I’d rather go and sit in the rain
Peace lovin’ man, I’m a peace loving man and
I won’t tell you again
Listen to all their lies
Not again, not again, not again
Take this bomb, drop it on old Hong Kong
Oh no no, you ain’t gonna get me at things like that
Oh no no, you ain’t gonna get me
Oh no no, you ain’t gonna get me
Peace loving man, I’m a peace loving man
Peace loving man, I’m a peace loving man
Peace loving man

KISS OF CONFUSION

There’s a man with his head in his hands
And he cries out as he dies, as he stands
So whoever is keeping strong, one more
Lord I’m frightened inside for
I can see there is nowhere to hide
So whoever has made the plan
Where is that golden place that
Everybody chases
Why do I feel disgraced
Oh no what kind of love is this
Confusion when we have had your kiss
The darker side of you is when you shine
Shining all the time
Rich man, poor man, beggar man, thief
Screaming out for some release
Kings and queens are begging, thieves
Are on the throne
Mother Nature’s plastic, God is made of stone
And those who follow
Jesus are the devil’s very home
Oh no what kind of fool am I
Confusion, kiss me while I cry
Darker side of you is when you shine
Lift me up and make me feel so fine
Then take away the fly and watch
Me fall You do it to us all
There’s a man with his head in his hands
And he cries out as he dies, as he stands
So whoever is making strong
One more, one more, one more, one more

LISTEN TO THE SILENCE

There’s no need for these words
They just get in my way
Do you know what I’m trying to say
Well beyond all the stars
There’s a place in the sky
If you listen you can hear the hush
Listen to the silence
Listen to the silence
Listen to the silence
Listen to the silence
Silence
Listen to the silence
Silence
Listen to the silence
Silence
Listen

LOVE BOMB

Have you been aware of the hush
That was there
Don’t you worry this is a part of us
Once upon a time they were sitting out
In the cold waiting for the sun to come
Sooner or later the sun came
Time began to run
They tried so hard to chase it
But time began to fly
As they raced nowhere
A million years went by
And the bullets start to fly
We have diplomatic men, diplomatic men with me
Selling gems of ignorance, pulling in the strings
There’s enough explosive hanging ’round
To blow a grave big enough for us all
Have we raced to nowhere
The rain begins to fall
What can we do when our world turns blue
And our minds don’t agree with the
Things we seem to be
And the cars that we buy they just don’t
Seem to satisfy
And the houses that we own, well they’re
Growing up too cold
What we need is a love bomb 100% gold plated, purified love bomb
We don’t have any and we need some
Easily unpourated, purified love bomb
On your TV dinner, buy a TV too
Sit in silence through the movie
But keep on talking through the news
Getting drunk on whiskey is the best
Thing you can do
‘Cause we turn to plastic, the
Horror film comes true
People try and people cry, others hit the wall
Many move and go running by, you can see them fall
Children of the Earth beware
Now’s the time to learn
The race to nowhere ends when
Time begins to turn
What can we say as we throw it all away
As we fly to the moon we’re still locked
Up in our rooms
And the bullets start to fly
Will the reapers still be wise
When they cry out for a friend Well it’s too late to pretend
What we need is a love bomb 100% gold plated, purified love bomb We don’t have any and we need some
Easily unpourated, purified love bomb
We don’t have, we don’t have, we don’t have one
And we need some

BILLY BOO THE GUNMAN

Hey billy blue boy where did you come from
Hey billy blue boy where did you go so wrong
Do you remember when you were young and
Full of dreams
Well how do you feel now
You are just a machine
Billy Boo, Billy Boo
Hey Billy blue you make me cry
You make me sigh
You’re a gunman on the right
Side of the law
What do you do when someone comes
To you and says why
Pow, pow, pow, pow
Band, bang, bang, bang
Boo, boo, boo, boo
We’re in the dark, man We gotta help each other
Whoa, black, white or red man
You are my brother
Your little sister she was so
Young and full of dreams
So why do you shoot her when
She begins to scream
Billy Boo, Billy Boo
Hey Billy blue you make me cry
You make me sigh
You’re a gunman on the right
Side of the law
What do you do when someone comes
To you and says why
Pow, pow, pow, pow
Band, bang, bang, bang
Boo, boo, boo, boo
Billy blue riding through the land with
A nightstick in your hand
Billy Boo you won’t get far in your big
Blue squad car
‘Cause Billy Boo’s a gunman
Billy Boo’s a gunman, Billy Boo’s a gunman
(repeat 10 times)
Hey there cowboy where did you go wrong
Hey Billy blue boy where do you come from
Billy blue, Billy Boo
Your little sister she was so young
and full of dreams
So why do you shoot her, why do you shoot her
Why do you shoot her when she begins to scream
Why do you shoot her, yeah now

INDIAN SUMMER

Leaves turn red, breath hangs in the air
Messages no words can say
Indian Summer
Webs your hair
Indian Summer
Silence fills the air
Indian Summer
Webs your hair
Indian Summer
Leaves turn red, breath hangs in the air
Migrating birds they prepare
As I look into the sky
Silver birds go gliding by
Indian Summer
I remember I was really here before
Yay, yeah

JUST ABOVE MY HOBBY HORSE’S HEAD

A day is near, darkness gone and
The world is clear
Children seek the light
We close their eyes and we
Call it night
As dreamer dreams we talk the hours away
As planets scheme we change
Tomorrow to yesterday
Borrow for a time
The lack we share is a sacred rhyme
Choosing we may find
We’re on the road and there are
No signs
Yet we live on hate And thrive on war
And we’ve done our towns
What is going down
Children raise their voices
Questioning all as we give choice
Answers flow within
Point the way to where we’ve been
And as the music plays
And we become all our days
That become years of our lives
Of our lives
And we say we’ll love
And we say we care
And we say we know
Everyday that we’re here
Oh, day is near, darkness gone
And the world is clear
And the world is clear
Every day that we’re here
Tell me do you care

WAIT A MINUTE

Have it your own way
There’s nothing here
Fragment by fragment
Our love disappears
But wait a minute
What’s gone wrong
Wait a minute, turn around
And see them standing here I’m still believing
Catch every moment
Let nothing slip away
Hold your breath
Wait a minute
Now that time stands still
I see no reason
For our parting
I believe
I see the sun it’s all around you
But I see your dreams
And what do they mean
Someone tell me
Wait, have it your way
Wait a minute
They say there’s nothing here, no
Wait
Wait, you can’t leave me behind
Wait a minute
But mileage doesn’t count
Wait
Wait you know I’ll say just anything I can
Wait a minute
To make you stay with me
Wait
So why don’t you stop here
Wait a minute
The sun is shining all around
Wait

What On Earth/Mrs. Murphy’s Budgerigar/Look At Me I’m You
(October 1967 - Marmalade 598 002)
“Look At Me I’m You / What On Earth / Mrs. Murphy’s Budgerigar : A value for money single! The first side runs over 4 minutes, and the 2 titles on the flip total nearly 5 and a half minutes. Difficult to describe the disc in a few lines, because there are so many different styles, influences, and ideas incorporated into 3 tracks. You’ve heard the Teenage Opera? Well, this is a sort of Teenage Compendium of Modern Beat Group Sounds! I found the disc thoroughly intriguing from the word “go”. Blossom Toes is a group laden with talent, which is exploited to the full advantage. Give it a try, and I think you’ll agree that there’s more substance and original musical conception in this single than in many an album, definitely worth while.”*

I’ll Be Your Baby Tonight/Love Is
(March 1968 - Marmalade 598 009)
I’ll Be Your Baby Tonight : Basic interest in this disc lies on the fact that it’s a Bob Dylan composition. And to their credit, Blossom Toes do it full justice. Doesn’t have the same immediate impact as “Mighty Quinn” because it’s not such a forceful number. It’s in the country blues idiom, with an easy going jog beat - and a flowing backing of acoustic guitars, harmonica, and piano.*

Postcard single sleeve
Postcard/Everybody’s Leaving Me Now
(October 1968 - Marmalade 598 012)
Postcard: A jolly nuttiness surrounds their whole set-up. They have so far remained encased in a great stock of anonymity, but here is a jolly, nutty record that might just appeal to jolly nuts everywhere. It tells of the joys of sending postcards home from holiday containing such fascinating information as ‘it hasn’t rained–much.’ *

Peace Loving Man single sleeve
Peace Loving Man/Above My Hobby Horses Head
(April 1969 - Marmalade 598 014)
“Peace Loving Man: Ah ha–the romantic mysteries of the East! A sitar wails plaintively in the introduction followed by freaking out of unparalleled proportions, filled with whisperings and growling, rather like Captain Beefheart meets the Mayor of Arkville. It does go on a bit.”*

New Day / Love Bomb

Blossom Toes

Blossom Toes

Blossom Toes was formed in 1962 at the Halver and Watts scientific instrument factory in Highbury and Islington, North London as The Gravediggers by bassist Brian Belshaw (born 25.2.1944, in Wigan, Lancs), lead guitarist Alan Kensley and rhythm guitarist / vocalist Brian Godding (born 19.8.1945, in Wales). They then got in drummer Fred Love. Kensley left to get married and was replaced by Eddie Lynch, a gawky guy with national health specs and rabbit teeth! Belshaw and Godding later changed the name of the band to The Ingoes. When Eddie Lynch left The Ingos he joined The Cheynes (Jul 1963 - Apr 1965), a band that included Peter Bardens organ, vocals (born 19.6.1944, in Westminster, South-west London died 21.2.2002, in Malibu, California, USA) (later in Them); Mick Fleetwood drums (born Michael John Kells Fleetwood, 24.6.1947, in Redruth, Cornwall) (later in Fleetwood Mac) and Phil Sawyer lead guitar (born Philip Sawyer, 8.3.1947, in London) (later in The Spencer Davis Group). With a new change came a new drummer Colin Martin, who replaced Love. They later recruited lead guitarist / vocalist Jim Cregan (born James Cregan, 9.3.1946, in Yeovil, Somerset), replacing Lynch who was asked to leave and went to The Cheynes. Then Martin left to be replaced by Kevin Westlake (born Kevin Patrick Westlake, 5.3.1947, in Ireland died 30.9.2004) (ex Johnny B Great and the Quotations, who included future Rockpile guitarist Billy Bremner (born William Bremner, in 1947, in Scotland). Later in 1967 The Ingoes became The Blossom Toes at the suggestion of someone who worked for their manager Gomelsky. When Kevin Westlake left Blossom Toes he was replaced by Poli Palmer in Late 1967. Palmer was replaced by Barry Reeves, ex soul band Ferris Wheel. Palmer went onto Election (Sep - Oct 1969) and Family (Oct 1969 - Oct 1973).

They were then housed in a flat in Fulham by manager Giorgio Gomelsky and entered Chappell Studios to record their debut album, We Are Ever So Clean, with an arranger and an advanced copy of The Beatles Sgt. Pepper album. The backing of much of the album was recorded by an orchestra and session men. The album was a 15 track collection of inventive psych pop (i.e. Telegram Tuesday, When The Alarm Clock Rings) with it’s share of weirdness (i.e. The Remarkable Saga Of The Frozen Dog). In 1967, the band contributed music to “La Collectionneuse”, a film by Éric Rohmer and appeared in “Popdown” by Fred Marshall.

Unfortunately, their live act at this time suffered due to the inability to reproduce most of the album on stage. As a live recording from their 1967 Swedish tour reveals, the Toes live material from this time has the band doing Captain Beefheart & Tim Hardin songs which is hard to imagine how that fit in with material from their debut, but it did hint at what changes in style they were to make by the time of their second album two years later. After a Swedish tour, Westlake left the band.

During 1968, there were two singles released, both featuring new member Poli Palmer (born John Michael Palmer, 25.5.1943, in Eversham, Worces) (ex Deep Feeling) on drums, flute and vibes. They released a cover of Bob Dylan’s I’ll Be You Baby Tonight and followed that with a true lost gem, Postcard backed with Everyone’s Leaving Me Now. The latter was written and sung by Poli Palmer and shows them playing on the jazzy side, while the ‘A’ side was a tightly crafted psych pop song. Palmer left shortly after the single and was replaced by Barry Reeves from the soul band Ferris Wheel. Their second album, If Only For A Moment was released in 1969. It was much less psychedelic than their debut, but is still a strong album in the hard rock vein and has some fine moments with the epic Love Bomb and the madness of the first track, Peace Loving Man.
